Primary Purpose of Position
Sinopec Canada has an opportunity for a Senior Completions Engineer (Contractor) to join the Wells and Facilities team. Reporting to the Acting Manager, Wells and Facilities, this position is responsible for planning, design, execution, and continuous improvement of well completions and hydraulic fracturing operations. While the primary focus is on completions and stimulation, the role requires an understanding of drilling workflows to ensure seamless project integration and operational efficiency. This position plays a key role in maximizing well performance, ensuring regulatory compliance, and driving cost-effective field development.
The Senior Completions Engineer (Contractor) will be based in Sinopec Canadas Calgary, Alberta head office.
Roles and Responsibilities
Completions & Fracturing Program Design
- Develop & optimize the detailed completions and fracturing designs, including stage spacing, fluid systems, proppant selection, completion tools, and perforation strategy.
- Prepare procedures, stick diagrams, and operational guidelines for field execution.
- Analyze offset data and post-frac well performance to optimize future programs
- Evaluate and implement new technologies or techniques for performance enhancement.
Project Execution & Field Support
- Coordinate all aspects of completion and simulation operations, from planning to execution, ensuring safety, efficiency, and cost control.
- Work closely with the technical supporting team and service companies to specify tools, equipment, and materials (e.g. frac sleeves, packers, perforating guns).
- Provide technical support to field staff and supervise critical operations (on-site presence may be required during key stages).
Regulatory & Compliance
- Ensure all completion and fracturing operations comply with AFE and environmental regulations.
- Prepare and submit regulatory documentation, including Frac Focus, water usage, and completion/abandonment notifications.
- Maintain accurate operational records and WellView data for audits and reporting.
Collaboration & Drilling Interface
- Work closely with the drilling engineers to ensure a seamless handover from drilling to completions; understand wellbore design and drilling constraints affecting completions.
- Participate in multidisciplinary planning meetings to align objectives and optimize project delivery.
- Provide input to drilling teams regarding completion requirements (e.g. casing design, wellhead specification, well trajectory considerations).
Performance Review & Continuous Improvement
- Conduct post-job analysis, project lookbacks, and lessons learned sessions to identify improvement opportunities and capture key learnings from the field.
- Implement process improvements and ensure best practices are shared and adopted across engineering and operations teams in a timely manner.
- Benchmark performance and drive innovation to continuously enhance operational efficiency and quality.
- Monitor key performance indicators (e.g. cost per stage, pump times, production response) to track progress and support decision-making.
- Routinely report project performance to stakeholders (weekly/monthly) and address management inquiries on overall project progress.
Safety & Environmental Stewardship
- Uphold and promote company HSE policies; participate in risk assessment, safety meetings, and incident investigations.
- Support the implementation of new HSE initiatives relevant to completion and frac operations.
Other Duties
- Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor or management.
Position Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
- Solid understanding of drilling operations, wellbore design, and field handover procedures.
- Proficiency with completions and fracturing software/tools (e.g., WellView, StimPlan, FracPro, Gopher, Excel).
- Experience with multi-well pad operations and high-rate, multi-stage fracturing is an asset.
- Familiarity with AER regulations and Alberta basin operations.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills.
- Excellent communication and teamwork abilities in cross-functional and multicultural teams.
- Proven project management, organizational, and cost control skills.
- Display a high level of integrity in all actions, complying with and promoting the companys core values, a respectful work environment, and aligning with the code of business conduct.
- Demonstrated commitment to safety and environmental compliance.
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Engineering or a related discipline.
- Minimum of 10 years of oil & gas industry experience, with strong emphasis on well completions and hydraulic fracturing (unconventional experience preferred).
- Professional Engineer (P. Eng) and APEGA member in good standing
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
