The Opportunity!

The Original Cakerie is looking for a Wastewater Treatment Operator for our London location. The Wastewater Treatment Operator is responsible for running a small mechanical/chemical treatment plant designed to reduce Oil & Grease and TSS loadings in order to meet The City of London sewer by‑law discharge levels. The incoming waste stream is a combination of miscellaneous discharges from floor drains and other operational processes from the main facility. Water from the equalization tank enters the treatment plant and first passes through a strainer screen to remove large particulate matter from the stream. The water then enters a large Dissolve Air Floatation Unit (DAF), where mechanical and chemical processes separate the wastes into a floating sludge. The sludge is skimmed off the DAF, collected and removed from site for further processing. The DAF effluent is discharged to the city sewer.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Conduct laboratory testing at various stages of the treatment process, focusing on maintaining optimal pH levels (colourimetric COD/phosphorus analysis, TSS, and pH measurements).

  • Monitor gauges, meters and control valves related to process flow, chemical dosage, and effluent.

  • Observe and assess operating conditions; perform calculations, identify issues, and implement corrective actions as required.

  • Operate pumps to control and adjust flow rates and treatment stages.

  • Operate valves and gates manually and remotely via SCADA system to manage treatment operations.

  • Adhere to the Original Cakerie’s process water treatment requirements to ensure regulatory and operational compliance.

  • Accurately perform data entry, maintain operational logs, trend data, and generate reports.

  • Communicate effectively with co‑workers, maintenance personnel, environmental coordinators, and health & safety representatives.

  • Ensure all products remain within required specifications.

  • Follow hygiene protocols in accordance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Master Sanitation Schedules.

  • Perform routine maintenance, including preventive maintenance and cleaning of equipment.

  • Adhere to safety, quality, and operational performance standards.

  • Support training and continuous learning activities within the department.

  • Dispose of waste bins in the garbage room as needed and support contract cleaning and maintenance services when necessary.

  • Perform other job duties as required.

Qualifications and Position Requirements

  • Completed post‑secondary education in an environmental or chemical related discipline.

  • Three or more years of job experience in water treatment.

  • Currently holds an active OIT license.

  • Knowledge of chemicals and comfortable working with exposure to cold temperatures.

  • Knowledge of operational parameters and treatment processes, mechanics and hydraulics of wastewater treatment.

  • Capable of working independently while maintaining organization and applying sound judgment in decision‑making.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Strong mechanical aptitude is a requirement.

  • Ability to perform heavy lifting, climb stairs, and work with a sense of urgency.

  • Must be willing and capable of undergoing training in working at heights and the safe operation of aerial platform equipment (e.g., Genie boom lifts, scissor lifts).

  • All other duties as assigned.

Shift Summary

  • Required to be available for a minimum of five shifts per week and be flexible to work Monday to Friday.

  • The shift runs for 8 hours with a 30‑minute break added.

Schedule

  • Must be able to accommodate the start time for this shift: 8:00 am – 4:30 pm.

Pay Rate

While performing the Wastewater Treatment role, the hourly rate is $27.59.
