Job Description
The Test Engineering role has the responsibility to ensure that the scheduled test activities are executed IAW approved schedule and budget. In order to fulfill this responsibility the Test Engineering role collaborates with the Designers, Project and System Engineering to develop quality test plans and procedures, select and install instrumentation (applicable to Technician role only), collect and store data, executes testing and collaborates in the development of the test reports.
Key Job Elements
- Select and instrument test equipment for component, subsystem and vehicle level testing in accordance with established test methodologies and approved test plan:
- Assist in the design of test fixtures and setups and oversee their construction, assemble/prepare instrumentation wiring/cabling
- Axial load and torque calibration methodologies;
- Measurement of pressures, temperatures, mass and/or volumetric flows, air velocities and air flow mapping, electrical currents, local strains and vehicle component loads, accelerations and/or vibration, sound pressures and equivalent sound pressure levels, luminous intensity, live fire blast pressures, high voltage measurements, vehicle network (CAN) data
- Measurements pertaining to vehicle behavior: pitch and roll angles, yaw angular rate, vehicle speed and GPS data
- Telemetry systems (UHF or inductive)
- Assist in the ballasting of test vehicles
- Program and setup of Data Acquisition (DAQ) systems, manually record non-electronic data during testing
- Participate in test execution, ensure that captured real time data is accurate through proper setup and confirmation of test instrumentation (grounding, guarding & shielding techniques, pre-test evaluation)
- Perform required data processing:
- Real time data recording of up to 5 MS/sec;
- Data processing using HBM N-Code Glyphworks, Infield and LabView
- High definition and high speed video recording
- Remove test instrumentation and equipment from unit under test upon completion of testing
- Assist in arranging shipment of test vehicles and equipment, spare parts, etc, to and from remote test sites
- Assist in the preparation and maintenance of test logs, files, etc.
- Maintain instrumentation inventory and calibration records
- Assist in the handling and managing of test data (electronic/non-electronic measurement data, photos, video, etc)
- Assist in post-test data reduction efforts required for test reporting
Required Qualifications
- University Degree or College Diploma in a related field
- Minimum 3 years relevant experience
- Basic knowledge of test data reduction and analysis techniques (Statistics, Linear Regression).
- In-depth knowledge of basic Engineering disciplines, mechanics of materials, shock and vibration, vehicle dynamics, etc.
- Intermediate computer skills in MS Office, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint
- Ability to travel (15% Cdn) and (15% US & Int'l) and possess/be able to acquire and maintain a valid passport
- Must be able to meet Anthropometrical Size Restrictions for confined space
Preferred Qualifications
- P. Eng or the ability to obtain a P. Eng
- In-depth knowledge of transducers (accelerometers, pressure & flow transducers, thermocouples, RTDs, Load cells, strain gauges, LVDTs etc.)
- Familiarity with dynamic data acquisition and signal processing techniques and equipment (sampling, analog and digital filtering, anti-aliasing, etc.)
- “Hands-on” experience in soldering techniques, cable and wire preparation, basic wiring and circuit techniques, small tool operation, etc.
