Seasonal Park Worker II (Summer 2026)

Job Description

Please note this is a contract opportunity beginning at the end of April 2026 to the end of October 2026.

Responsible for Grass Maintenance: maintaining Town owned property, mowing lawns, trimming. Special Events: participating in the set up and take down of equipment used at events, supporting recreation during special events and maintaining Newmarket's downtown area. Horticulture: performing a variety of gardening tasks, such as weeding, planting, pruning and watering of shrub beds, planters. Cultural Field Maintenance: maintenance of Town sports fields including, mowing, fertilizing, paint lining, and baseball diamond dragging. General Parks: Maintenance of Town parks, including assisting with playground repairs, and replacements, inspections, and general construction. Forestry: care for trees along boulevards, trails, and parks, including trimming, pruning and removal.

Job Requirements

  • Minimum of High School education along with formal academic training in parks related disciplines or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Previous experience in municipal parks or horticulture/forestry, sports field/turf maintenance is required.

  • Available to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends.

  • Ability to take and provide directions and the ability to work on own initiative and to respond appropriately to any situation which may arise.

  • Ability to read, comprehend and understand WHMIS labels, equipment manuals, complete logs and incident reports to fulfill health and safety obligations.

  • Practical working knowledge of health and safety regulations and trained in WHMIS procedures to deal with equipment, and parks maintenance.

  • Ability to operate parks related equipment such as trucks and trailers, riding mower, tractors, trimming equipment, snow removal and salting equipment.

  • Ability to deal courteously and effectively with staff, park users/groups and the general public.

  • Class "G" Driver's License required in good standing and satisfactory to the Town of Newmarket.

  • Due to the nature of the contacts of this position, a Police Vulnerable Sector Check acceptable to the Town is required.
