Job Description

Position: Registered Practical Nurse

Department: CCC A1/B1

The Acute Inpatient Psychiatry Unit (AIPU) unit provides high-intensity, acute psychiatric services 24 hours a day for individuals in acute psychiatric distress and who are 18 years of age and older experiencing acute psychiatric symptoms and/or at risk of harm to self or others. The core of the program is psychiatric consultation and assessment, supported by nursing, psychology, social work, concurrent disorders, occupational therapy, and recreational therapy services. This service, offered in Nipissing, Temiskaming and the Northern portions of Muskoka-Parry Sound, treats a range of individuals in acute distress or psychiatric crisis with the aim of controlling symptoms and restoring patients' ability to function. Key means of treatment include pharmacological treatment, skill and knowledge building, and supportive, patient focused discharge planning.

QUALIFICATIONS

Certification/Experience/Knowledge:

  • Current Certificate of Registration ~ College of Nurses of Ontario required
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers (HCP) Certificate required (recent within the last twelve months)
  • Capillary Blood Glucose Certification required
  • Minimum 2 years medical clinical experience required
  • Experience in Dementia Care required
  • Certified in Medication Administration required with recent related experience (within the last two (2) years) required
  • Experience with catheterization
  • Gentle Persuasive Approach (GPA) Certificate and PIECES certificate required
  • IV maintenance an asset
  • Wound management knowledge and experience an asset
  • Knowledge of Recovery Oriented Practice supporting patient choice is an asset
  • Knowledge of applicable legislation (I.e. Mental Health Act, PHIPA, etc.) is required
  • Knowledge of RAI an asset

Skills/Abilities:

  • Excellent level of physical assessment skills required
  • Demonstrated ability to de-escalate patients an asset
  • Demonstrated ability in therapeutic and interpersonal communication skills is required
  • Excellent level of interpersonal skills required
  • Excellent level of written and verbal communication skills required
  • Ability to effectively provide health teaching to individuals and groups required
  • Ability to work as a collaborative member of the health team required
  • Ability to assume responsibility for patient care in a total patient care climate required
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision required
  • Ability to meet the physical demands required to provide nursing care to medical patients required
  • Must demonstrate commitment to ensure the safety of fellow workers, patients, volunteers, and visitors
  • Must support and contribute to a culture of safety and prevention of adverse health events in this organization
  • Basic computer skills required
  • Good attendance and work record required
  • Must be available for scheduled shifts and call-ins
  • Bilingualism (Advanced level English/French) is required. All unilingual candidates are encouraged to apply and may be considered if the identified French requirement has been met or there are no successful bilingual candidates. A formal French test will be conducted to evaluate the proficiency level.
