Position: Registered Nurse
Department: Critical Care Unit
Full Time Equivalent 0.6 (FTE)
Duration Approximately SIX (6) Months
The Critical Care Unit is a 16-bed specialized unit caring for critically ill patients who require constant monitoring and whose conditions can be life threatening. Low nurse to patient ratios assures close monitoring and early detection of any subtle changes in patient condition. We provide care to cardiac, medical and surgical patients (from pediatric to geriatric). A team of specially educated and experienced staff deliver specialized care with state-of-the-art monitoring systems. The team consists of Anaesthetists, Internists, Surgeons, Registered Nurses, Registered Respiratory Therapists, Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Pharmacists, Dietitians, Social Workers, and Pastoral Care.
QUALIFICATIONS
Certification/Experience/Knowledge:
- Current Certificate of Registration ~ College of Nurses of Ontario in good standing required
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers (HCP) Certificate required (recent within the last twelve months)
- Current Advanced Cardiac life Support (ACLS) Certificate required
- Current Certificate in I.V. Therapy and Central Line Management required
- Coronary Care Course (min. 25 hrs.) and/or Lead II/12 Lead Interpretation Course (min. 15 hrs.) required
- Minimum years) Medical/Surgical experience (within the last 2-3 years) required
- Minimum (1-2 years) Critical Care experience (within the last 2-3 years) required
- Critical Care Certificate or in the process of obtaining is an asset
Must have or be able to obtain certification of added nursing skills and delegated medical acts specific to C.C.U. by the end of orientation period:
Cardioversion/defibrillation
- Application of external pacemaker
- Arterial line management
- Emergency drugs administration
- Ventilators
- Central Line management with CVP monitoring
Skills/Abilities:
- Must demonstrate excellent level of interpersonal skills
- Must demonstrate excellent level of written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with all members of the multidisciplinary team, clients, families, regional support services and community partners required
- Ability to provide health teaching to individuals and groups required
- Must be committed to continuing education on an annual basis and demonstrate commitment to quality improvement required
- Ability to effectively assume a leadership role as a collaborative member of the health team required
- Ability to assume responsibility for patient care in a total patient care climate required
- Able to meet the physical demands required to provide nursing care to all patients required
- Ability to problem-solve and function in fast-paced environment required
- Excellent demonstrated assessment, critical thinking and intervention skills required
- Must demonstrate basic computer knowledge
- Must demonstrate commitment to ensure personal safety, safety of fellow workers, patients, volunteers, and visitors
- Ability to support and contribute to a culture of safety and prevention of adverse health events required
Must demonstrate good attendance and work record
Bilingualism (Advanced level English/French) is required.
