Overview and Purpose of the Role

We are currently seeking both full-time and part-time Personal Support Workers (PSW) to join our OR team.

The PSW in the Operating Room plays a critical role in supporting safe, efficient surgical care. Working as part of the interdisciplinary surgical team, the PSW ensures operating rooms are prepared, maintained, and turned over efficiently between cases while supporting patient transport, positioning, and overall case flow.

This role directly contributes to patient safety, infection prevention, and the timely progression of the surgical schedule by allowing clinical staff to focus on direct patient care.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

Operating Room Preparation & Turnover

  • Prepare rooms with required non-sterile equipment, furniture, and positioning devices.
  • Check functionality of suction, cautery, lights, beds, and other equipment prior to cases.
  • Remove waste, soiled linen, and used equipment following procedures.
  • Support efficient room turnover to maintain surgical schedule flow.

Patient Support & Transport

  • Transport patients safely between units (pre-op, OR, PACU, inpatient units).
  • Assist with patient transfers between bed, stretcher, and operating table.
  • Assist the team with patient positioning under RN direction.
  • Provide comfort, reassurance, and respectful support to patients.

Supply & Equipment Management

  • Restock operating rooms, carts, and storage areas.
  • Monitor and report low stock and expired supplies.
  • Assisting with collection of urgent supplies and medications from pharmacy or equipment as needed.
  • Retrieve equipment and supplies during procedures as requested.
  • Maintain organized, clutter-free workspaces.

Infection Preventon & Safety

  • Follow strict cleaning, disinfection, and waste handling protocols.
  • Support OR traffic flow and environmental safety practices.
  • Maintain a safe environment for patients and staff.

Team Support

  • Anticipate the needs of the surgical team during busy case flow.
  • Support RNs, scrub nurses, anesthesia providers, and surgeons with non-clinical tasks.
  • Contribute to maintaining on-time case starts and efficient daily flow.
  • Perform additional duties and understake special projects as assigned.

Corporate Responsibilities:

  • Participate in all mandatory training requirements and work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, company Policies and Procedures, as well as established industry guidelines.

Education, Skills & Qualifications:

  • Health Care Aide Certificate or equivalent recognized training
  • Current BLS certification
  • Experience in a hospital or surgical environment preferred
  • Knowledge of infection prevention and control practices
  • Ability to safely perform patient transfers and other physical tasks
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills, particularly in stressful situations
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with staff, patients, and visitors
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills
  • Proven ability to perform effectively in fast-paced, high-pressure environments while managing competing priorities
  • Commitment to patient safety and high-quality care
  • Team-oriented with a proactive approach to supporting others
  • Successful completion of a criminal record check, including a vulnerable sector check
  • Proof of immunization status and TB screening
