Intermediate Litigation Associate Position - Insolvency, Foreclosures, Commercial Litigation

About Owen Bird

We are a full‑service business law firm in Downtown Vancouver, and for more than 50 years, we have provided exceptional service and outstanding results for our clients.

Our clients are large, medium, and small businesses, including publicly traded companies, financial institutions (including chartered banks, credit unions, and non-bank commercial lenders), and leaders in real estate, telecommunications, and other sectors. Due to our affiliation with Interlaw, a network of full‑service business law firms in over 150 cities around the world, a significant number of our files involve transnational aspects.

We strive for excellence in our practice but attempt to do so in an environment that is informal, collegial, and respectful. We strive to be open and transparent within our firm. We provide mentorship to our associates in practice skills and client development with the goal of training associates to be future shareholders. We believe that there is more to life than the practice of law, and all lawyers, students, and support staff are encouraged to live balanced lives and be involved in their communities.

In October 2022, we moved to new state‑of‑the‑art premises located on the 29th and 28th floors of Vancouver Centre II, located at 733 Seymour Street. Our office has a private deck space for the use of our lawyers, staff, and clients. We invite the successful candidate to join us for this new and exciting chapter of our history.

Position

We are currently seeking a litigation associate whose practice will focus on insolvency, foreclosures, and commercial litigation.

Our intermediate litigation associates have conduct of their own files (for cases of appropriate complexity) and assist senior counsel with aspects of more complex files.

The ideal candidate will be a 3-to-8 year call who has previous experience in these practice areas. Experience with foreclosures, receiverships, and proceedings under the BIA and CCAA would be valuable background skills to have. The candidate should be capable of conducting files from beginning to end.

This is an excellent opportunity for a well‑rounded, self‑motivated individual who possesses sound judgment, a solid work ethic, and good interpersonal skills. Bringing an existing client base, although an asset, is not a requirement. The right candidate would ultimately have the opportunity to grow their practice and apply to become a shareholder in due course.

Compensation

We are on a lockstep compensation model based on year of call, comparable with the market, with a competitive bonus/incentive model that rewards associates who exceed billable hour expectations.

Base salary: $143,000 – $195,000, depending on year of call.

Application Process

To apply, please submit a brief cover letter (1 page maximum), a CV (2 pages maximum), and a practice synopsis if available. Please indicate your available start date in your cover letter. Applications should be submitted by email to the Associates and Articling Committee at recruitment@owenbird.com.

The application deadline is January 30, 2026, but we’ll be reviewing and interviewing candidates as applications come in.
