Job Description

Overview
Participates in all facets of golf course maintenance, including turf management, equipment maintenance, integrated pest management, irrigation, landscaping, horticulture, arboriculture, and related administration.

Responsibilities

  • Monitors and assesses course conditions, playability of the course, irrigation system, turf care, equipment, integrated pest management.
  • Applies all chemical applications (fungicides, herbicides, insecticides and fertilizers/wetting agents) as well as calibrates equipment as required.
  • Performs all duties assigned in various types of weather conditions (e.g., rain, sun, snow, sleet, smog, direct sunlight), extreme hot/cold temperature variations.
  • Maintains, operates, troubleshoots, and performs repairs for irrigation and records daily water usage as required.
  • Performs other maintenance (e.g., painting, re-stocking), and refurbishing (e.g., benches, ball washers, tee blocks, garbage/recycling stands) in clubhouse, maintenance buildings, course fixtures, on-course washrooms, and pump houses as required.
  • Drives truck with plow to remove snow from parking lots and entrances. Shovels snow and salts entrances, walkways, and around facilities.
  • Performs all tree maintenance, plantings, removals, pruning etc. and operates chainsaws, woodchippers, stumpers and other equipment required etc.
  • Trains part-time staff in safety, golf course maintenance and equipment practices and procedures.
  • Orders/purchases and maintains inventories with Supervisor for irrigation components, course supplies, safety supplies etc. and allocates material receipts with Concur.
  • Maintains all required records for Integrated Pest Management certification, fertilizer, pesticide, and water-use records.
  • Participates in rotational on-call responsibilities every 2 to 3 weeks weekly (April-November) and acts appropriately to deal with issues that arise, e.g. pesticide applications/irrigation issues, vandalism etc. Must be able to respond within 30 minutes of a call.
  • Trains/assists others in and/or performs preventative maintenance (e.g., greasing), washing, and fuelling correctly. Collects daily inspection forms completed by other staff and communicates defects or repairs with Supervisor.
  • Trains co-workers on the safe operation of all machinery and advises regarding potential hazards and personal protective clothing associated with each duty and piece of equipment. Trains co-workers (e.g., temporary staff, students) on various aspects of golf course maintenance.
  • Operates and trains others in the safe and proper operation and maintenance of approximately 70 pieces of equipment. Instructs others in the safe installation and removal of equipment implements. (3 point hitch attachments, pull behind units, etc.).
  • Operates all golf course equipment, (e.g., sprayers, mowers, tractors, triplexes, trenchers) for all course related maintenance daily.
  • Transports equipment safely between locations using trailer hook-up and proper load security practices.
  • Identifies and provides recommendations to supervisor for any additional work needed to maintain various turfgrass areas, such as turf renovation and irrigation.
  • Monitors and assesses turf conditions, identifying maintenance needs based on your understanding of target turf composition, maintenance practices, biodiversity, irrigation systems, and integrated pest management (e.g., insects, disease, nutrient requirements, drainage, wear patterns).
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education

  • 2-year Ontario Diploma in Turf Management or Horticulture or equivalent.

Additional Requirements

  • Valid Chainsaw operator certificate or willing to obtain within 3 months.
  • Valid Ontario landscape exterminators' licence.
  • Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Agent Certification.
  • Valid MTO G class driver's license in good standing to be able to drive a City Vehicle and ability to provide Drivers Abstract at your own expense as a condition of employment.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Knowledge of turf care, soil principles, plant biology, diseases, and IPM.
  • Understanding of irrigation systems and golf‑course maintenance standards.
  • Knowledge of pesticide handling, application, storage, and posting requirements.
  • Basic arboriculture skills for pruning, trimming, and tree removal.
  • Working knowledge of OHSA and golf‑course safety practices.
  • Ability to follow safety procedures, SDS guidelines, and proper equipment handling.
  • Ability to follow facility operations, turf‑care procedures, and preventative maintenance routines.
  • Ability to work safely, efficiently, and report grounds issues.
  • Ability to use hand tools and operate golf‑course equipment and machinery.
  • Ability to use electronic devices, computers (Microsoft Office), and irrigation control systems.
  • Reliable with a good attitude and employment record.
