Job Description
The Department of Finance has the mandate to provide leadership and direction to the public service in all areas of finance and human resource management. This mandate includes negotiating major financial arrangements with the federal government, providing analysis and advice to the Financial Management Board, and ensuring that financial and information resources are managed effectively, efficiently and economically. This mandate also includes the recruitment and retention of a competent public service that is representative of the people it serves andthe development of programs and services that effectively serve the human resource needs of the public service.

Join a team dedicated to fostering a respectful, supportive, and legally compliant workplace across the GNWT. In this position, you will provide expert guidance to managers on complex accommodation and return-to-work matters, ensuring that processes are fair, timely, and well-documented. You will monitor and evaluate accommodation plans, maintain reliable tracking and reporting systems, and interpret legislation, policy, and case law to support informed decision-making. In this role, you will also contribute to GNWT-wide standards by developing tools, training, and best practices that strengthen our overall approach to accommodation.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide support and advice to management on re-integration of employees on extended leave, due to health reasons, into the workplace in a fair, safe, respectful, legal, and appropriate manner.
- Provide guidance to HR practitioners and managers on all aspects of employee accommodation and reintegration, including effective communication, legal obligations, appropriate requests for medical information, and the development of suitable accommodation options and plans.
- Educate managers on duty-to-accommodate and reintegration practices by developing, delivering, and evaluating training programs and materials.
- Ongoing research of information to ensure the GNWT maintains best practices and consistent standards in supporting employees' return to the workplace.
- Monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of accommodation plans and measures to ensure best practices and that the GNWT is meeting its legal obligations.
Key Skills and Abilities
- Strong knowledge of duty-to-accommodate legislation, case law, and human resources best practices.
- Ability to analyze complex information, interpret legislation and collective agreements, and make sound, well-reasoned recommendations.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
- High level of empathy, professionalism, and discretion when handling confidential and sensitive employee information.
- Strong organizational and time-management abilities, with capacity to work independently and manage multiple cases simultaneously.
Key Qualifications
A bachelor's degree with two (2) years' experience in human resources, interpreting legislation, collective agreements, policy, or case law, and providing advice, including at least one year of direct experience in labour relations.
- A college/university diploma with four (4) years' experience in human resources, interpreting legislation, collective agreements, policy, or case law, and providing advice, including at least one year of direct experience in labour relations.
- Six years' experience in human resources, interpreting legislation, collective agreements, policy, or case law, and providing advice, including at least one year of direct experience in labour relations.
- All other equivalencies will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
