Director, Group Disability – Sun Life

Responsibilities

  • Take ownership of operational performance, ensuring quality, compliance, and timeliness across all disability operations (STD, LTD, ECI).
  • Make strategic decisions to optimize team capacity while maintaining even workload distribution.
  • Optimize return-to-work outcomes in safe, sustainable, and timely ways.
  • Spearhead the modernization of operations through digital tools, automation, and data-driven insights.
  • Align the Edmonton office with Sun Life’s national disability strategy and innovate claims management, client engagement, and plan member support processes.
  • Represent Sun Life at external events, showcasing leadership and industry expertise.
  • Lead a high-performing, engaged team through clear expectations, accountability, and empowerment.
  • Reduce employee attrition and deliver talent development to nurture future leaders.
  • Foster a culture of trust, accountability, and inclusion through personal example.
  • Leverage leadership skills to influence national processes and collaborate with BD, IT, HR, Risk, and Legal.
  • Take proactive ownership of client relationships, work closely with Business Development to resolve issues, and drive satisfaction.
  • Make data-driven decisions to improve client satisfaction scores and support sales efforts.
  • Demonstrate strong decision-making skills in implementing change initiatives.
  • Influence cross-functional partnerships to achieve business goals.

Success Metrics

  • Significant improvements in claim durations and financial results.
  • Measurable increase in client and advisor satisfaction scores.
  • Substantial decrease in employee turnover and improved engagement metrics.
  • Successful implementation of technology and process innovations.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of leadership experience in complex, client-facing operations.
  • Strong track record of leading through change and delivering measurable business outcomes.
  • Deep knowledge of disability claims management and rehabilitation practices.
  • Experience building and developing high-performing teams.
  • Strategic mindset with strong execution skills and operational discipline.
  • Exceptional communication, influencing, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong data analysis and interpretation skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree (equivalent experience acceptable; advanced credentials are an asset).

Compensation

Base Pay range: $110,000 – $180,000 (depending on location and factors). Eligible employees participate in incentive plans subject to performance.
