Hiring: Long-Term Care Garden Facilitator


Organization: The Giving Garden Project™


Location: Stoney Creek, Hamilton, Ontario


Part-time contract 10hrs/wk


Duration: April - November


Rate of pay: $25/hr


The Giving Garden Project™ is an Ontario-based nonprofit organization whose mission is to foster health, connection, and well-being by creating therapeutic gardens. We serve seniors and vulnerable populations, addressing food insecurity, mental health, social isolation, and ecological responsibility through accessible, community-driven gardening initiatives.


Responsibilities



  • Establishing and maintaining vegetable gardens in raised garden beds (including weekly maintenance visits and facilitating participation of staff and residents).

  • Supporting LTC home staff with watering and garden maintenance duties.

  • Developing and delivering weekly garden programming and education for LTC residents and staff.

  • Coordinating garden harvests with LTC kitchens and donations to community organizations.

  • Establishing a collaborative garden culture within the LTC homes for residents, staff and families.

  • Tracking attendance and providing feedback to the Program Lead.

  • Work remotely as part of a collaborative team, participating in regular virtual check-ins.

  • Following health, safety, and accessibility protocols.


Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills



  • At least 1 year ecological vegetable gardening or farming experience.

  • Experience facilitating educational workshops and programming.

  • An interest in creating meaningful engagement opportunities for LTC residents and staff of all abilities and developing accessible, person-centered and community-driven garden programming.

  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative approach to working with multidisciplinary teams.

  • Ability to work independently, think creatively and take initiative.

  • Experience working with seniors, people experiencing memory loss and dementia and with designing/implementing accessible programming an asset.

  • Experience in therapeutic gardening and/or horticulture therapy an asset.

  • Must have the ability to travel between garden locations and transport materials as needed.

  • Ability to lift and move heavy materials (e.g., garden beds, soil etc.).


Other Requirements



  • Proof of at least two COVID-19 vaccinations.

  • Vulnerable sector police check.

  • TB Test - Proof of 2 step.

  • Must be able to comply with all health and safety requirements and PPE.
